Study of aging processes and resistance to stress: Comparative studies of marine organisms with models.

The ComAgeMed project aims to understand the mechanisms of aging through a comparative biology approach ranging from coral to humans and to transfer these concepts to biomedical issues in the fields of cancer and the treatment of age-related pathologies.

  • Axis 1: currently, the two main models of aging are based on the one hand on the accumulation of oxidative damage by the cells and tissues of organisms (“free radical theory”) and on the other hand on an erosion of telomeres punctuated by cell division (“telomere end replication problem”).
  • Axis 2: aims to explore the possibility that this coupling is conserved during evolution and that it plays a role in the control of cell renewal in tissues and in cancers.

The ComAgeMed project brings together 5 research organizations: the Scientific Center of Monaco (CSM) and the supervisory bodies of the Institute for Research on Cancer and Aging (IRCAN), the Côte d'Azur University (UCA), the National Research Center Scientific (CNRS) and the National Institute of Health and Medical Research (INSERM).
